bank strike 2026

Posted on September 11, 2026

All the banking activities in India would be hampered by the strike call issued by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) for September 11, 2026. The reason behind the strike call is that employees’ concerns will be addressed, including the adoption of the five-day banking week and concerns about the Performance Linked Incentive scheme.

Why Are Bank Employees On Strike?

The five-day banking week has always been one of the concerns of bank employees. The unions have demanded changes in the working pattern and implementation of an agreement concerning the five-day week. Employees have also raised their concerns about the PLI scheme adopted by the government.

The strike would be more effective on branch-based banking facilities, especially when many employees go on strike. Many leading banks, such as SBI, PNB, UCO Bank and others, have already informed their customers.

Which Banking Services Could Be Impacted?

Visitors to branches could find themselves facing disruptions to services such as cash deposits and withdrawals, cheque processing, KYC update, account related requests and counter services. Hence, customers having urgent business at their banks are advised to take precautionary measures.

On the other hand, services like UPI, Internet Banking, Mobile Banking and ATM are likely to continue functioning but some services could suffer from delays due to certain technical/operational issues.

Disruption for Four Days For Certain Customers

The strike timing for certain customers may be inconvenient. This is because September 11 will be followed by September 12 (Saturday) and September 13 (Sunday) where bank branches remain closed. In some states, even September 14 is a bank holiday.

What Should Customers Do?

Customers that need cash, cheque services, KYC process update, etc., will be advised to refer to the latest advice of the bank before visiting the branches. For ordinary banking activities, digital banking, UPI, and ATMs can prove to be beneficial options during the disruption.

In addition, the September 11 strike is one of many actions being undertaken in the program of industrial action. According to the bank unions, there will be another three-day strike on September 28–30, followed by an indefinite strike beginning October 26 depending upon the situation.

Overall, the present-day strike will affect branch activities, but the customers will still be assisted by the digital banking system.
