Harmanpreet Kaur, captain of the Indian women’s cricket team, continues to create a magical career chapter that has now become part of an incredible year for her as 2025 will be remembered as one of her best years ever. On Friday, Harmanpreet built on her already outstanding career when she passed former Australian captain Meg Lanning’s long-held T20 international record after leading India to a convincing win over Sri Lanka. In addition, this record further demonstrates the level of consistency and leadership of Harmanpreet Kaur but also exemplifies India’s growing dominance in women’s international cricket.

Once again, Harmanpreet’s actions demonstrated her ability to lead by example and why she is one of the most important figures in modern cricket. Under pressure and with precision, Harmanpreet played a significant role in leading India to an impressive eight-wicket victory at the Greenfield Cricket Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram. With this victory, India secured the series win, giving them a good start to their first international assignment since winning the World Cup.

Harmanpreet broke the T20I record previously held by Meg Lanning, who had set this record as the goal of consistency and excellence for women’s cricket for many years. By breaking this record, Harmanpreet has joined the very elite (the “legends”) of our sport and further solidifies her position as one of the greatest cricketers of all time from India. With her ability to perform at every level of the sport (across formats and tournaments), is motivated and continues to influence not only her teammates but also fans.

Harmanpreet’s record-breaking performance was a highlight, but the overall win for India was a total team effort. The standout performance for India came from Shafali Verma, who scored a brilliant unbeaten 79 runs (and only needed 42 balls to do it!) Her fearless stroke-making and aggressive intent at the start of the innings decimated the Sri Lankan bowling attack, allowing India to complete the chase with 40 balls remaining.

With disciplined and influential displays, India’s bowlers set the standard for the win. Renuka Thakur did brilliantly with the new ball, taking four very important wickets that knocked Sri Lanka’s batting behind early on. In the mid-overs, Deepti Sharma was also a big support to Renuka, taking three wickets while also putting Sri Lanka under pressure by bowling tight overs. The two of them combined prevented Sri Lanka from generating momentum by keeping them below an average total.

India has been successful throughout the series due to the team depth, balance, and well-defined roles managed by Harmanpreet Kaur. The mixture of experienced players, continuing their success from the World Cup, and younger players will allow for a consistent performance no matter the conditions, as demonstrated by India’s performance in 2025.

Harmanpreet Kaur has achieved more than just a personal milestone: she has created herself as a captain, as a player, and as an inspirational role model through her years of hard work and perseverance as a leader. She continues to break records and perform at an elite level and 2025 will be a significant year for her. Leading into the major events on the global stage, the fans will be expecting the team’s success to continue through Harmanpreet’s superb play.
