UK and US forces involved in seizure of sanctioned oil tanker

The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed that British armed forces provided support to a United States-led operation that resulted in the seizure of a Russian-flagged oil tanker in the North Atlantic. The incident highlights the close defence and security cooperation between the UK and the US.

On Wednesday, US forces intercepted and took control of the tanker Marinera, previously known as Bella-1. The vessel had been placed under US sanctions for allegedly taking part in sanctions-evasion activities linked to Russia and Iran. According to the MoD, the UK offered pre-planned operational support, including surveillance, naval assistance and access to military basing facilities for US forces.

Role of British Forces

British involvement focused on monitoring and logistical support rather than direct enforcement. The Royal Air Force (RAF) provided airborne surveillance, tracking the tanker’s movement across the North Atlantic and supplying real-time intelligence to US forces. Meanwhile, the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) vessel Tideforce supported the operation by offering logistical assistance during the interception.

The MoD stressed that UK personnel did not board or physically seize the tanker. Instead, all British activity was carried out at the request of the United States and remained firmly within the framework of international law. Officials stated that the tanker’s sanctioned status and repeated attempts to avoid enforcement justified the operation.

Sanctions, Evasion and the “Shadow Fleet”

The Marinera has a long history of changing names and flags, a tactic often used to obscure ownership and bypass international sanctions. UK and US officials have described the vessel as part of a growing “shadow fleet” a network of ships used to secretly transport oil and other goods in defiance of global trade restrictions.

Defence Secretary John Healey said the tanker showed clear signs of sanctions evasion, including operating under false identities and attempting to alter its registration while under surveillance. These actions, he explained, made the vessel a legitimate target for interception under international maritime law. Healey added that cracking down on such activity is essential to protecting global security and enforcing international rules.

Political and Strategic Implications

The seizure comes at a time of heightened tensions between Western nations and Russia. Moscow has strongly criticised the operation, accusing the US of violating maritime law and using unlawful force against a Russian-flagged vessel. Some Russian officials have gone as far as calling the seizure an act of piracy.

UK officials rejected these claims, maintaining that their support for the operation was lawful, proportionate and necessary. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander praised the professionalism of British forces and said it was right for the UK to assist its closest ally when requested.

Strengthening UK-US Defence Ties

The incident underlines the strength of the UK-US defence partnership. Healey described the United States as the UK’s most important security ally, noting that joint operations like this demonstrate how effectively the two countries can work together to address shared threats.

Although British troops did not directly seize the tanker, the use of surveillance, naval support and logistical coordination shows how modern military cooperation operates across borders. The UK government has confirmed it will continue working with international partners to disrupt shadow fleet operations and enforce sanctions that support global security and stability.
