An unfortunate event marred the celebration of Jagannath Rath Yatra 2026 at Puri, Odisha, on 16th July 2026, as devotees were killed by a sudden rush of crowd during the religious event. The annual festival that draws lakhs of pilgrims from across India and foreign countries to Puri, Odisha, was being held with high fervor until a panic situation arose amid the crowd gathering for watching the pull of the holy chariots along the Bada Danda (Grand Road).

The sudden crowd rush took place at one of the busiest times during the festival as people were hurrying to have a look at Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra. The rush, mixed with rainfall and lack of movement in certain areas, resulted in temporary loss of control of crowd management. Some of the devotees suffered from suffocation while other devotees got injured in the process. Emergency services quickly responded to the incident and started their rescue operations.

First aid assistance was rendered to those who were wounded, and then they were transported to hospitals that were near the path of the parade. According to reports, at least two people lost their lives, while several others got injured and needed medical attention. Many were offered oxygen and other forms of treatment before being released from the hospital, while a few were under observation. The authorities are still counting the total casualties.

In anticipation of such an incident, the Government of Odisha had arranged a huge security force for the celebration, which included thousands of police officials, special teams, ambulances, drones, CCTV cameras, disaster management teams, among others. Nonetheless, despite all the security measures that were put in place, the incident came as a surprise, making it difficult to manage such crowds during one of the biggest religious events in India.

After this incident, the state government conducted an inquiry into the case to find out the real reason behind this stampede and any mistakes in managing the crowd at the same time. State officials went to the hospital to check on the wounded people while the local officials gave assurance to devotees that further steps would be taken to ensure the safety of the devotees for the rest of the event of Rath Yatra.

The Jagannath Rath Yatra is still one of the most celebrated religious festivals in India where faith and devotion are practiced by many people. The tragic incident may have added a shadow to the otherwise happy occasion but the devotees still offered their prayers for the rest of the rituals in peace.
