3% Hike in Dearness Allowance

Posted on October 29, 2026

The 3% Hike in Dearness Allowance has brought some relief to central government employees and pensioners, with the Union Cabinet approving an increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR). Announced on October 28, 2026, the decision raises the DA rate from 60% to 63% of basic salary. Pensioners will also receive a corresponding increase in DR. The revised rates will take effect from July 1, 2026.

This move has been made just before the festive season when there would have been an additional burden on the pocket. This increase will help 48.54 lakh central government employees and 68.71 lakh pensioners. The total annual financial implication of the increment is likely to be ₹10,016.10 crore.

3% Hike in Dearness Allowance Raises DA to 63%

The new ruling raises the current rate of DA by 3%. In the previous ruling, DA was provided at 60% of the basic salary of eligible central government employees. With this revision, the new rate stands at 63% from July 1, 2026.

This revision is done based on the accepted formula of Seventh Central Pay Commission recommendations. There is continuous updating of DA on the basis of change in the cost of living and inflation.

Since the 3% Hike in Dearness Allowance is retrospective, eligible employees will have their salaries calculated using the revised allowance from the effective date. However, the exact amount payable will depend on their basic salary, eligibility and applicable service rules.

For example, in case of an employee whose basic salary is ₹30,000, the additional amount payable is ₹900 per month due to this revision. In case of an employee whose basic salary is ₹50,000, the additional amount payable is ₹1,500 per month.

The above amounts are only for the additional DA.

Who Will Benefit from the Latest DA Hike?

The new rate of Dearness Allowance mainly serves the interest of the government employees who come under the scope of the applicable pay structure. In case of pensioners who qualify under the provisions, the Dearness Relief will also be revised accordingly.

An estimated 48.54 lakh government employees and 68.71 lakh pensioners will gain from the above decision. The total number of people gaining from the revision is well over 1.17 crore.

In the case of government employees, the increase in DA means an increase in the allowance part of their salaries. As for the pensioners, the increase in DR will help them along with the pensions that are due to them. However, in case of state government employees and public sector employees, one needs to check the concerned department.

Dearness Allowance assists the employees in meeting the increased cost of living, including cost of food, transportation, health care and electricity bills. Even though the increase will not completely cover the inflation, yet it gives an added earning to help the eligible people with their budgets.

Why the Dearness Allowance Increase Matters

Typically, the Dearness Allowance is usually revised twice a year in association with January and July. This helps to compensate for any variation in the cost of living through the use of the prescribed methodology and the related measures of inflation including the Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW).

This revision is based on the same system that has been established in accordance with the recommendation of the Seventh Central Pay Commission. The revision results in an increase in the allowance without impacting the basic pay of an employee.

The employees and retirees must refer to notifications and their respective salaries/pension documents for further clarification. As the new rates will be applicable since July 1, 2026, the eligible recipients can also seek information regarding arrears, if any.

The 3% Hike in Dearness Allowance will also benefit pensioners through an increase in Dearness Relief, helping them manage medical costs and other essential expenses. For serving central government employees, the revised DA will provide additional financial support for household budgets and everyday family expenditures.

On the whole, the 3% increase in DA allowance results in the Dearness Allowance increasing to 63% from 60%. The move will be advantageous to over 1.17 crore recipients.
