UPI Transactions

Posted on November 2, 2026

The digital payment environment in India has now reached another significant landmark as UPI Transactions surpassed 25 billion for the first time in October 2026. The recent figures indicate the increasing reliance of individuals on instant digital payments, with millions of people using UPI for their day-to-day purchases, online shopping, bill payments, and money transfer activities. The payment interface recorded approximately 25.5 billion transactions worth ₹31.5 lakh crore during the month.

It clearly indicates the significance of digital payments in the Indian payment environment. Starting from street vendors and small local groceries to big retailers and online payment systems, UPI is facilitating cashless payments. The easy payment system of the interface is encouraging the users to make digital payments.

Growth in recent times is also occurring amidst the holiday season, which is known for the rise in expenditure on clothes, gadgets, food, travel, and other products. The use of mobile and QR payments being opted by many is further cementing the status of UPI among India’s most popular digital payment platforms.

UPI Sets New Transaction Record in October 2026

Based on the latest figures from NPCI, UPI has witnessed around 25.5 billion transactions in October 2026, against around 24.1 billion transactions in September. The month-on-month rise in transaction volumes is reported to be around 5.8%.

There has been a significant rise in the value of payments too. In October, the value of UPI transactions stood at around ₹31.5 lakh crore, as compared to ₹29.4 lakh crore in September, indicating a month-on-month growth rate of around 7.4%.

The number of daily transactions saw a rise to around 822 million in October from 802 million in September. However, the most significant milestone was reached by the average daily transaction value in October, which crossed ₹1 lakh crore for the first time to reach approximately ₹1,01,707 crore.

From these numbers, it is clear that the increase is not confined merely to the volume of transactions but extends even to the value of transactions, which suggests that people are now using UPI to make more transactions and have greater payment needs.

The annual percentage increase in the transaction volume was around 23% while that of the total value was about 16%. This shows the sustained growth of digital payments regardless of the change in the spending behavior of consumers.

Festive Season Drives Stronger UPI Payment Growth

However, the festive period helped drive up the number of UPI transactions in the month of October. Festivals like Navratri and Durga Puja made consumers shop more, dine out more, travel more, and purchase household items. Online festive sales also made for more payment transactions.

Today, most people find it more convenient to use the QR code system or mobile payment apps than carrying money around in their pockets. Hence, even small businesses have started accepting digital payments through the UPI system.

In addition, the average transactions per day show that the number of payments made in the month of October were high not only because it had 31 days but also on account of per-day payments.

The other notable development is the discussions around the charges imposed through the Merchant Discount Rate (MDR). This is the rate charged during the processing of merchant payments. The changes have led to questions regarding how the cost of processing payments would impact the merchants, payment processors, and the whole payment system.

Accessibility of the transaction fees while ensuring an efficient payment structure would be vital as the use of UPI increases. Small businesses, in particular, need payment options that are easily accessible without adding extra burden.

Final Thoughts

Crossing the mark of 25 billion monthly transactions is significant for the digital payments revolution in India. With transaction volumes crossing ₹31.5 lakh crore and daily average payments going past ₹1 lakh crore, the UPI system will continue to reinforce its footprint in the Indian financial ecosystem. The next level of development will require not just higher numbers of transactions but will also demand sustainability and security.
