India vs South Africa

The Test match between India and South Africa began with great expectations, and the first hour of play delivered a drama suitable for a series decider. India had one goal in mind, and that was to make inroads early with the ball. Jasprit Bumrah wasted little time in hitting the right areas. However, what should have been the perfect start was folly, as KL Rahul knocked down a regulation catch at second slip, leaving Bumrah aghast.

After winning the toss and electing to bat first on a pitch that appeared bowler-friendly early on, South Africa faced early pressure. Bumrah was, of course, always a threat on the seam with the ball or off the pads and it seemed he was consistently beating the outside edge with deliveries jumping off the seam. The Indian fielders were aware of this and took their positions with hope and excitement, knowing that the early morning over could define the directions of the match and one remained.

Bumrah made the ball move intentionally on the seventh delivery of the morning. It moved away from the batter but in the right exposure for an uncertain little prod. The edge was a thick one, but it went straight to second slip and would have been a comfortable catch, or at least he would have caught it if he had got his hand properly up. KL Rahul doesn’t drop these catches, so it was surprising to see a normally safe pair of hands at slip misjudge the speed of the ball and react a fraction late. He had one of those moments that every slip fielder dreads: the ball hit his glove, unbeknownst to him, and bobbled up and fell to the ground. Bumrah took the perfect position at the crease with hands on hips, staring at Rahul as if he couldn’t believe it, and began to walk back to his mark.

Dropped catches are simply a part of cricket; however, this one felt especially expensive considering the circumstances. The bowler was finding his rhythm, the batter wasn’t in control at the time, and South Africa hadn’t found a rhythm in the innings yet. Rather than an opportunity for a breakthrough, India was left wondering what could have been while South Africa rebuilt with a degree of caution. The early momentum that India was looking for evaporated, at least temporarily, as fans replayed the moment over and over.

Rahul, for his part, looked dejected with himself. Slip catching demands focus, soft hands, and the ability to anticipate things, and Rahul has all of those things, but even the best fielders make mistakes! What really heightened the drama, however, was the timing of the drop: it was at a time when India was pushing really hard, almost feeling they were on the cusp of a wicket. As the murmurs swept through the crowd and replays flooded the big screens and spectators reached for their phones, Twitter and online cricket forums came to life with reactions which ranged from sympathy to very strong criticism.

Even after the brief setback, Bumrah wasted little time in regaining his momentum. What followed in his next few overs was justification as to why he is India’s best fast bowler. He continued to threaten both edges, varied his seam positions cleverly, and beat the bat regularly as well. Mohammed Shami and the rest of the bowling unit also showed discipline to make sure the pressure was not taken off South Africa at all. The tourists mindful of India’s skills, attempted to leave more deliveries outside the off-stump and not take too many risks.

India’s intention for the day relied significantly on early wickets, as conditions were bound to become easy to bat on at some stage. Sometimes it only takes one mistake, in terms of opportunity, to set a day’s play and the Indians had three sessions ahead of them to make up for it. The game had already produced some thrilling moments as the first drinks break approached there was more than enough to discuss for those following from their armchair with the live score.

The dropped catch might stand out as a moment of significance or it could easily be lost in the rhythm of the game. Either way, it’s apparent that the second Test is going to be a battle. South Africa wants to put down a strong foundation and India is intent on hunting for another breakthrough, today promises to be more entertaining, more tension and perhaps redemption for Rahul and gratification for Bumrah.
