In a surprising turn of events, Virat Kohli fresh off a brilliant 135-run knock in the first ODI against South Africa in Ranchi has reportedly made a U-turn and agreed to play in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy. This shift comes shortly after the BCCI expressed dissatisfaction with Kohli’s post-match remarks, where he appeared to downplay the importance of extensive preparation ahead of international fixtures.
Kohli’s original comments, made after his match-winning century, suggested that he has “never been a big believer in a lot of preparation,” emphasizing that much of his cricketing strength is “mental.” He pointed out that after playing “300-odd ODI games,” what matters most is staying physically and mentally ready rather than accumulating match practice through domestic tournaments.
According to reports, these remarks “did not go down well” with the BCCI. The board had earlier urged senior players including Kohli to participate in the Vijay Hazare Trophy to maintain match rhythm and competitive readiness ahead of upcoming international commitments.
Just a few days later, Kohli informed the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) of his availability. This marks his return to domestic one-day cricket after more than 15 years. Delhi begins their Vijay Hazare campaign on December 24 against Andhra Pradesh, and DDCA officials welcomed Kohli’s decision as a sign of his continued dedication to the game.
Why Kohli’s reversal matters
- Reinforcing professionalism and alignment with the BCCI
Kohli’s change of stance shows that even the biggest stars are willing to align with the board’s vision. By participating in domestic cricket, he demonstrates commitment to staying in form something that could reinforce his standing with selectors ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. - Major boost for domestic cricket
Kohli’s presence in the Vijay Hazare Trophy provides a huge morale boost to Delhi’s team. It also inspires young domestic players, showing them the value of hunger and discipline even at the highest level. - Balancing confidence with humility
While Kohli’s earlier comments reflected confidence in his mental readiness, his decision to play the tournament shows humility and appreciation for the broader cricketing ecosystem. It underscores the importance of staying connected with the grassroots game.
Context: Why this is significant now
After retiring from Test and T20 Internationals in 2025, Kohli has shifted his focus to ODIs, where he remains one of India’s most reliable performers. His Ranchi century featuring 11 fours and seven sixes proved his class at the age of 37.
At the same time, the BCCI and selectors, eyeing the 2027 ODI World Cup, want senior players to maintain competitive sharpness. Encouraging veterans like Kohli and Rohit Sharma to feature in domestic tournaments is part of this long-term strategy.
