In India, There is constant competition in the sport of cricket. Although not being selected or dropped is part of a player’s cricket progression, a player like Mohammed Siraj (to be ignored by the Indian selectors for the T20I team) may consider it a setback. Even though it would have been easy to throw in the towel, Mohammed Siraj chose to let his on-field performance prove to the Indian selectors his true worth, which was shown in his performances of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT).
Long known as a bowler who performs best when under pressure, Siraj has built a reputation for excelling when given responsibility. His strengths are well documented: the ability to move the new ball; bowl consistently good lengths; and bring energy and intensity to every spell he bowls throughout his first-class and One Day International career. While he was regularly included in the Test and One Day International plans for India, as T20I teams began to focus increasingly on younger fast bowlers, and to have specialised roles for those playing the shortest format, Siraj found himself watching from the sidelines.
Instead of being frustrated with this situation, he turned his attention to domestic cricket, viewing this as an opportunity to showcase his skills and prove himself through the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT). The SMAT has traditionally provided an opportunity for players aspiring to represent their country, and Siraj took advantage of this opportunity. As the spearhead of his State’s bowling attack, he utilised both experience and accuracy to put together disciplined bowling performances under pressure throughout the tournament. His ability to take wickets with the new ball, to control the flow of runs in the middle overs, and to bowl effectively at the death was something that I found particularly impressive and noteworthy in an era where most formats of the game are dominated by aggressive batsmen and high scores.
Siraj displayed an unusual ability to adapt to different forms of T20 cricket, championing himself with the continuous transformation evident in T20. Seemingly shown through Siraj’s versatility, adapting continuously to the evolving “game”; employing a greater number of variety when utilizing pace throughout a match; and possessing a better understanding of how to utilize pace to create an impact, either to break a run of wickets or to defend a score. The way Siraj played certainly exhibited the potential of being able to react to the challenges and opportunities of T20 cricket and succeed where others may not have.
In addition to his numbers, the way that Siraj approached the game was equally as impressive. He bowled with great intensity, celebrated his wickets with great enthusiasm, and was inspirational in the way he played. Although many times within domestic tournaments a leader’s ability to guide his players go unnoticed, selectors look for a player who can contribute to the success of a team by encouraging other players and influencing a game on its way to victory. Ultimately, the skill set that Siraj has brought to his team has equipped his team not only with a greater ability and confidence but has further established Siraj as a player who can perform at the highest of levels.
Competing for places in India’s T20I squad is extremely contentious, with a number of talented emerging pacers providing compelling evidence for selection through their successful IPL and other domestic performances; however, the spectacular performances that Siraj has put in during the SMAT competition have highlighted the importance of gaining experience and remaining calm under pressure, especially in an international tournament environment where being able to keep your composure can be quite valuable. Siraj’s journey thus far has encompassed numerous highs and lows, and as such, he is well prepared for scenarios like these.
Selection decisions concerning teams are shaped by considerations about how best to balance a team’s needs now as well as its long-term strategy; however, given what we have seen with Siraj during this period, one cannot simply overlook what he has accomplished. Although Siraj has not publicly stated his feelings regarding being left off the T20I squad, certainly the fact that his bowling performance has said 1000 times what he could ever say, with unwavering intention throughout each over. He’s hungry now, and is concentrated and prepared when his number is called.
Mohammed Siraj’s return to form will now play a big part in the ongoing selection debate for Indian cricket as they continue to prepare for upcoming challenges. Having been excluded from T20I selections, Siraj is now a star of the SMAT competition and the selectors should see from his recent performances that he possesses all of the attributes needed to succeed at the highest level form, fitness and fire are still alive and well within him. Whether or not this opportunity will result in an immediate recall for Siraj, his persistence and performance have once again shown that in cricket, performance and persistence are the two truest measures of success.
