Odisha Iron Ore

Posted on August 7, 2026

Coal India Ltd has emerged as the favored bidder for the Gadadharpur block of iron ore in the Kendujhar district of Odisha, indicating a step in the direction of the diversification of Coal India from its traditional business of coal mining. This is an important development not only for Coal India but also for the state of Odisha, which is one of the major mineral producing states in India.

Diversification at Coal India

The business of Coal India has largely been limited to coal mining. However, the recent development of the Gadadharpur block of iron ore indicates its entry into iron ore mining.

The shift also highlights the significance of mineral diversification as India advances the development of its industrial sector. Iron ore is a vital component in steel production, thereby necessitating the need for assured availability of the resource in the nation.

Resources Exist In Gadadharpur Block

Gadadharpur iron ore block is found in the district of Kendujhar which is famed for its mineral wealth and mining operations. It has reached the G3 stage of exploration which calls for further exploration and evaluation of the area before mining activities commence.

The estimated resource in the block has been determined to be about 288 million tonnes. It was Coal India that won the preferred bidder status through the bidding process with an auction premium of 114.05% of mineral dispatched value.

That said, being selected as the preferred bidder does not automatically ensure the commencement of mining operations as there are still some conditions that need to be met by Coal India in relation to the bidding process. According to reports, Coal India has only one year to satisfy these conditions, while the mining lease deed will take three years to be signed.

What This Means for Odisha

This means yet another stakeholder will join the fray in Odisha’s iron ore industry. Kendujhar already boasts a reputation in terms of India’s mining and steel industry and the additional investment in the development of its mineral reserves may result in more economic activity in the region.

This said, responsible mining will always be critical. Development of natural resources should go hand in hand with environmental considerations, regulatory compliance, safety issues, among others.

Conclusion

The choice of Coal India as the preferred bidder marks a significant step at this early stage. Coal India will have to carry out the exploration work before this block goes into production.

From the perspective of Coal India, this project is not merely about gaining access to a new mineral reserve. Rather, it is also about gradually changing its course of business and getting involved in the larger mineral and steel value chain in India. For the state of Odisha, this is just one more story in its rich mining history.
