August 21 is celebrated annually as World Senior Citizens Day to acknowledge and pay tribute to the contributions, wisdom, experience and accomplishments of senior citizens. It also raises the issue of problems faced by senior citizens such as loneliness, health problems, financial insecurity, non-accessibility, neglect and abuse.
The celebration is often linked with the US celebration of National Senior Citizens Day, declared by proclamation 5847 of President Ronald Reagan in 1988. Later, this celebration came to be known as World Senior Citizens Day due to its wide recognition in awareness and educational aspects. It should not be mistaken for the UN International Day of Older Persons which is celebrated annually on October 1.
Senior citizens are very vital in the family, community, workplace, and society. The experience of senior citizens teaches a lot to the younger generation. They maintain tradition, cultural knowledge, give guidance, and work with their skills in order to benefit from their experiences. Their stories are helpful in linking the past and the present.
Since aging populations are growing around the world, helping out the senior citizens is now an important social obligation. In India, the population of the senior citizens will increase very much in future. It shows that there is a lot of importance given to healthcare, economic welfare, social participation, and aging-friendly environment among other needs of the senior citizens.
World Senior Citizen Day also provides the chance to pay attention to the things that can be done every day for improving the life of older people. People can spend time with grandparents and other elderly relatives, can listen to them and ensure that they are involved in decision making processes. It is possible for communities to organise various awareness programs, health camps, cultural events and other activities aimed at increasing social contacts. Finally, younger generations can also learn something from senior citizens, can tell them about all modern achievements of humanity.
However, most of all, respect to senior citizens should not remain only in the form of celebration of one day in a year. Real appreciation requires creation of such society, which would provide safety, respect and support for the seniors all year round.
On the World Senior Citizen Day, we want to pay our respect to those, whose experience became a foundation for many families and communities. We can do it by being kind, patient, thankful and respectful to them. Honouring senior citizens means paying tribute to their wisdom, which is the legacy of the past, but also a very important source of guidance for the future.
