Prashant Kishor’s win in the Bankipur by-election has given a political thickness to the BJP in Bihar, changing what was earlier thought to be a stronghold of the party into a land of renewed political challenges. The victory marks the electoral debut of Prashant Kishor’s new Jan Suraaj.
There was a general belief that Bankipur was a safe seat for BJP. The loss of this seat has consequences beyond the mere votes of a by-election; Kishor’s success shows that certain voters who were earlier considered to be firmly with the BJP might be looking for political alternatives where local issues and political discontent meet.
The election result is remarkable given that Kishor switched from consulting to politics after working for years as a strategist. His shift from being a specialist in electoral matters to actually working in politics was not quite easy. Kishor’s new party, Jan Suraaj, could not have any success in the election and lost all the seats in the Bihar Assembly election. Of course, Kishor admitted the failure of his party and accepted the responsibility for its bad performance.
However, the success in Bankipur gives Kishor a chance to improve his position among politicians. His campaign now is mainly focused on young people and local issues, such as education, employment and their opportunities.
The BJP will need to analyze whether the Bankipur outcome signifies just a minor local defeat or a broader problem in the future. Over the years, the BJP has relied on its well-organised party structure and fidelity of its supporters. However, now the situation gets complicated with the coming of Jan Suraaj if Kishor is able to mobilise young voters and others, who have been disillusioned with the traditional parties.
The outcome also indicates the transformation of political processes in Bihar. Established political organisations ruled the roost there for decades, but things might be changing now, as the fact that a new political force is able to win in the area where the BJP used to hold sway means that voters are eager to try something alternative.
A single by-election cannot create a political trend. The struggle now for Kishor is to convert his electoral success into some organisational success. Winning a single seat is much easier than building a statewide political network to compete with established parties.
For the BJP, the immediate thing is to see what the party did wrong in Bankipur. The party has started taking stock of its defeat, with senior leaders investigating what led to this failure.
The larger question is if the BJP views this defeat as an isolated incident or as a sign of changing voter sentiment. Kishor’s victory, in itself, does not mean that there is some great transformation in Bihar politics, but it does mean that Bihar has a new enemy.
