One of the world’s largest steel plants run by Indian tycoon Lakshmi Mittal’s company ArcelorMittal was struck by missiles fired by Russia on Sunday, August 16, which killed two people and injured another 14. The attack took place at the ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih plant located in central Ukraine. The facility is one of Ukraine’s biggest industrial companies as well as the largest steel producer in Ukraine. In addition, the energy and blast furnace operations sustained damage, and the production operations had to be partially suspended.
These events occurred amid a sudden surge in attacks from long range in Russia and Ukraine. Just a few hours before the Russian strike, Ukraine carried out one of its largest drone attacks against Russia, with more than hundreds of drones attacking Moscow and other territories in Russia. According to the report of Russia, 822 drones were intercepted in Ukraine’s attack, while six people died as a result of this attack.
These incidents highlight how the Russia-Ukraine conflict is increasingly spreading beyond the conventional frontlines.
Russian Missile Strike Hits ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih Steel Plant
The ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih plant, situated in the native city of President Zelenskyy of Ukraine, has faced an assault from Russia after the latter has reacted violently due to the large number of drones launched by Ukraine. It has been reported that the company’s one site suffered damage and operations were paused for some time due to such assaults, which have affected the plant’s capability to produce normally.
There have been some casualties among the civilians due to the assault. It has been stated that two persons died and 14 others got injured in the assault on the steel plant. There was another assault in the city which led to death of one person. Besides, Russian strikes in the cities of Zaporizhzhia, Sumy and Donetsk have led to loss of some lives, while strikes in Kyiv have injured many people and have ignited fires in some places.
According to the Russian Defence Ministry, the strikes were conducted at the metallurgical plant in Kryvyi Rih and the military industry facilities in Kyiv. In addition, the strikes by the Russians are often considered to be directed at undermining the Ukrainian military industry and infrastructure. In its turn, Ukrainian officials believe that the Russian government has bombed civil objects and critical infrastructure.
The importance of bombing of the ArcelorMittal plant lies in the fact that it plays a significant role in the economy of Ukraine. Therefore, any damage and the possible disruption may influence steel production, people employed, logistic processes, and local economic activity. Besides, the damage done proves the challenges that major companies may experience trying to work under the conditions of long-lasting war.
It should be stated that it is not the first time when the steel plant was involved into the process of conflict. Earlier, ArcelorMittal had to change its plans of working due to the security and economic issues caused by the war.
Ukraine-Russia Drone War Raises Wider European Concerns
Lakshmi Mittal’s Ukraine plant was attacked in the context of escalating drone warfare. Hundreds of Ukrainian drones were deployed towards Russia, while Russian officials indicated that 600 drones were identified flying towards Moscow. Meanwhile, a second attack was conducted using more than 150 drones targeting towns in the Rostov region, with casualties amounting to five deaths along with property damage in homes and a railway station.
Ukrainian drones have also been reported to strike a private home in the Moscow region, which resulted in the death of an 83-year-old male citizen. Another attack led to a fire outbreak at a Wildberries warehouse in Podolsk.
As Ukraine has started using drones and missiles that can travel long distances in order to strike at the military industries and energy sources of Russia, it is clear that Ukraine has started adding another dimension to the conflict as they are now trying to target areas far away from the actual battlegrounds. At the same time, Russia is continuing their own campaigns against Ukraine using missiles and drones.
According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukrainian cities had to face more than 1,550 drones attacking them, 1,560 precision air strikes, and 62 missiles in the past week.
However, the situation not only brings about worries within Ukraine and Russia but also in other countries. The Ministry of National Defence in Romania has announced that a Spanish F-18 fighter jet brought down a drone, which violated the Romanian airspace at its border with Moldova. Romania, which is a member state of NATO, has reported several cases of drone invasions since the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.
In addition, it becomes increasingly hard to contain the war geographically. There might be consequences of attacks on the energy systems, industry facilities, warehouses, and transportation system even outside active battles.
Final Thoughts
The missile attack by Russia on the ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih facility owned by Lakshmi Mittal is a notable event amidst the recent rise of the Russia-Ukraine war. With two people killed, 14 wounded, and damage done to the steel-making facilities, the incident shows how vulnerable Ukraine’s industrial sector becomes.
The rising number of Ukrainian drones attacking Russia and their subsequent retaliatory strikes all over Ukraine point to the role of long-range warfare in the ongoing war. The recent case of the drone that invaded Romania’s airspace illustrates the dangers that may come to neighbouring European countries.
With the intensification of the attacks and uncertain diplomacy, the damage done to civilians, businesses, and critical infrastructure will continue to be one of the biggest concerns.
