To maintain soft and supple lips even in the coldest months, we sought advice from an expert in winter lip care.
As winter envelops us in its chilly grasp, many of us encounter a common foe—chapped lips. The harsh cold and dry air can wreak havoc on our delicate lip skin, leaving them dry, cracked, and often painful.
While the instinct for many is to resort to licking our lips in hopes of restoring moisture, this habit can do more harm than good. To safeguard our lips from the winter’s harsh effects, we consulted an expert for guidance on effective lip care.
Chapped lips during the winter season are typically caused by a combination of factors, including cold temperatures, low humidity, and the habit of licking one’s lips. Dr. Seema Oberoi Lall, a consultant in dermatology at CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram, explained that this trifecta strips the natural oils from the skin, leading to dehydrated, chapped lips.
Here are some tips to combat the dreaded chapping of lips during the colder months:
1. Hydration is key: Drink plenty of water to maintain overall body hydration, preventing lips from drying out. Using a humidifier in your living space can also add moisture to the air.
2. Exfoliate: Regularly exfoliate to remove dry, flaky skin from the lips. A homemade lip scrub using a mix of sugar and honey can work wonders. Remember not to over-exfoliate.
3. Lip balms: Invest in high-quality, moisturizing lip balms containing ingredients like beeswax, shea butter, or cocoa butter. Keep it handy and apply throughout the day, especially before heading outdoors.
4. Avoid licking your lips: While a natural instinct, licking your lips can worsen the situation. Saliva evaporates quickly, leaving your lips drier than before. Instead, opt for protective measures like using a scarf or turtleneck to shield your lips from the cold wind.
5. DIY overnight treatments: Apply a thick layer of petroleum jelly or a hydrating lip mask before bedtime. This allows the product to work its magic overnight, deeply moisturizing your lips and preventing overnight dryness.
With a touch of tender loving care, you can bid farewell to chapped lips this winter season. “If chapped lips persist despite your best efforts, it may be time to consult a dermatologist. Persistent chapping can be a sign of an underlying issue that requires professional guidance.”
