The Olympics that started in ancient Greece is something that holds a massive value together with the principles of sport and cooperation. For a given four-year term, the world’s most talented athletes converge to participate in multiple events in different fields of sport while promoting friendship and unity among the world’s nations. Olympics are not just a sports competition, Olympics are human endeavors and a demonstration of the desire to achieve the very best.

The Beginnings of the Olympics

The Olympic Games in their modern form have origin in Ancient Greece from the year 776 BC. The games were situated in Olympia which was a sacred place for all the Greek gods and goddesses and the games were originally a part of the religious event meant for Zeus. These early games were characterized by different competitions that included running, wrestling, boxing, and chariot racing etc. The original Olympics persisted for approximately 776- poly 11 centuries before they were ended by the Emperor of Rome, Theodosius I, in AD 393 due to his religious favoritism.

The Modern Revival

The present day Olympic Games were actually taken into an organized form in the year 1896 CE by a French mind, Pierre de Coubertin. He dreamed of Olympics as a means of popularizing physical education, proving peaceful intentions of nations and demonstrating spectators’ respect to sports. Unlike today, the first modern Olympics consisted only of 14 countries and it was hosted in Athens, Greece and consisted of 43 events. Since then on, Olympics have expanded amazingly where the last games had exceeding 200 countries and thousands of athletes.

The Olympic Values

The Olympics are built upon three core values: of good work, companionship, and courtesy. It is all about the ability to produce the very best even when not playing the game. A friendship promotes construction of a peaceful and improved world by togetherness, team spirit as well as happiness. Regarding Respect as fair play, not hurting oneself and others, pushing one’s limit without compromising health, and the health of the earth. These are the Olympic values, which determine the uniqueness of the games and inspire athletes and spectators to achieve the best results.

 Note that now the event is called Summer and Winter Games.

The Olympic Games are divided into two main events: There are two major categories of the Olympic Games; the Summer Olympics and the Winter Olympics. Summer Olympics comprise of athletic, swimming, gymnastic, and basketball sports among others while Winter Olympics has skiing, ice hockey, and figure skating among others. Both the sets of games are convened every four years, but the Summer and Winter Olympics are organized in a two-year interval.

Sport has been a dubbed being not just a play thing but something that brings people together through iconic events that have occurred in the Olympics. It compels us to achieve the best in academics and in all areas of life, promotes friendship across the world, and tolerance to other people’s differences. The more the Olympics change the more they will still be an emblem of hope, unity and ability in people of the future.
