The biggest protest rally took place at Jantar Mantar of Delhi on July 21 when the supporters of social activist Sonam Wangchuk along with the members of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protested against the leak of examination papers and demanded more transparency in the Indian education system. The protest took place after increased security was observed in the national capital following the conflict that erupted during the “Sansad Chalo” protest rally organized the previous day.
The current protest is considered one of the most popularly followed public protest movements in 2026. The hunger strike and hospitalization of Sonam Wangchuk has made this protest movement a bigger one than the one based on education-related problems only.
Protest at Jantar Mantar Gains National Attention
However, thousands of protesters gathered outside the Jantar Mantar area despite tight security arrangements made throughout central Delhi. The security forces have been deployed to make barricades, limited entry points, and extra manpower in and around the sensitive spots so that there is no kind of disruption during the Monsoon Session of Parliament.
The ongoing protest movement is being spearheaded by the students, who are raising their voice about the leakages in the examination papers time and again. They want a change in the education system of India because of such incidents.
One of the prominent figures who came forward in support of the movement was Sonam Wangchuk, who is very well-known for his contribution to education and sustainable development in Ladakh. The 21 day long fast undertaken by him garnered great public attention before he was moved to Safdarjung Hospital on account of poor health condition of Sonam, which came to the notice of the concerned authorities on advice of the doctors.
Following the transfer of Sonam Wangchuk, the leaders of CJP movement declared that the movement would continue until the demand raised by them get official reply.
Government Response, Police Measures and Political Reactions
The Delhi Police justified the stringent security measures, asserting that these measures are essential to ensure law and order when the Parliament is in session. Public safety was one of the concerns in relation to the movement, since the authorities had imposed restrictions on several areas in the central part of Delhi. In addition, temporary diversion of traffic routes and restriction of access to some metro stations has also been done as a precautionary step.
On its part, the Central Government has stated that there is politics involved in the protest, while some of the opposition parties have voiced their support for the protesters. Some political figures have even advocated a healthy discussion between the government and the representatives of the agitation to diffuse the tensions.
On the other hand, there have been some legal proceedings after the refusal by the Delhi High Court to give an urgent hearing on a petition against the expulsion of Wangchuk from the protest venue to the hospital. The matter can be taken up by the judiciary under the usual course of action later.
The ongoing protests have resulted in discussions on social media about various aspects including the reformations in the examination system, transparency, the well-being of students, and democratic protests. Solidarity protests have taken place in various cities of India in support of the movement.
It has been observed that the protest movement is the manifestation of the dissatisfaction of youth over education, employment, and accountability. The authorities are monitoring the situation, but it is important to note that the organizers have declared that they will remain peaceful in their protest movements.
As Parliament continues to sit, it will be observed whether the government makes any attempt to begin discussions with the protesters or takes any action to address the issues relating to examination reform. In the coming days, the course of one of the biggest youth-led protests in India can be decided.
Conclusion
From being just a local issue, the protest at Jantar Mantar has escalated into a national debate about educational reform and transparency. Although it was the hunger strike carried out by Sonam Wangchuk which caught everyone’s attention and gave prominence to this struggle, there are many other concerns being raised by the students and civil society activists which will continue to define the current protests.
